He was raised by his Mother (Deborah Mathers), he never knew his Dad (Marshall Mathers Jr.) who abandoned the family when Eminem was only 18 months of age. Marshall Mathers tried to contact his dad during his childhood many of times but his father Rebuffed the attempts he made.

Marshall Bruce Mathers III was good at English and used the musical Genre Hip-hip to release his youthful anger. He began his music career by attending rap battles located in Detroit, however at this time rap music was dominated by back people and because Eminem was pale white with blue eyes he was never able to fit into the scene and had to make his reputation by frequently entering Rap battles.

Using His Stage Name as M&M he began to change the way of writing it as ‘Eminem ‘. From being brought up in Forest Gate we can find that Plan B has lived in London and has been brought up into a rough society, therefore Plan B has taken on the behaviour and was brought up to have a rough personality. There is still a lot to see from the young artist and his other career options coming up in the future.

Reflective Analysis Part one

My task was to complete an analysis on three artists relflecting the type of artist I intend to re-create for my coursework artist; the analysis will demonstrate musical style of the artist and the imagery associated with the artist through the the music video.

I broke down the video to see the relationships, between  the genre, the use of intertextual references  This activity  is useful because it has helped me deconstruct the video and help identify why the artist has chosen certain imagery to extend the meaning/or make the meaning clear inthe song in relationship the lyrics.

By competing this activity, it has given me a good idea of what the artist is trying to achieve through his music and how the artisit is atempting to market his product and appeal to the intended target audience. I believe in every music video their is a message that relates to the lyrics of the song. However, this is not the case for all videos
I began by studing an American artist, with an african American heritage, I will be creating  an artist who is white and from British culture. American artists  translate well to a British culture because although some of the language and settings might be diffferent the ideas within the music are understandable in a British culture, because American music is in may ways global music. Black artists have a different social set of expieriences based on their own cultural background Therefore, I have altered my future reseach plans to research  British artists like Plan B, Plan B is a product of British culture and therefore more like the artist  I am going to create.

In This analysis, i have learnt that even though the music may be similar, the artists have the same styles. Its clearly shown that an artists race can change how they impact the aucidence and what kind of audience they they adopt.

Analysing and decontructing a music video part one (Mac Miller - Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza)

Name of Track: Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza
Name of Artist: Mac Miller

Features to look for:
General Example:
Detailed Example:
Genre
Hip-Hop, electro pop, comedy
Mac miller is a hip hop artist who rapes but has a style which represents chilled music.
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
There is link between showing mac miller as a teenager as his age is representing the type of stereotypical teenager shown in the film KIDS
Being 18, he is represented as the type of stereotypical teenager shown in the film KIDS. For example he is shown walking around with a gang of young youth his age, this is because he is represented as the leader being in front.
What is the relationship between the music and visuals?
The type of music being hip hop is represented in poverty areas which gangs are most likely to be hanging around, for example he is shown in New York
In the lower areas of New York and Los Angeles, we are confronted by gang members of a younger youth which hang around in their local towns, from this we understand that this is a intertextual reference from the movie KIDS. Carrying around a boom box takes the video back in time to the era of the film
Are there Close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
There are close ups of the artists
As the Artists goes around these areas we are constantly following him by being in front as having him walk towards us constantly, this shows we are tracking the artists
Is there any reference to the notion of looking?
There is no notion of looking

Because the camera is always focused on the artists. From the editing of the camera style he is viewed as the leader because he is always in front of the crowd.
Are There Intertextual References?
Intertextual References of The 1995 drama film ‘KIDS’ written by Harmony Korine and Directed by Larry Clark
Film is About skateboarders and teenage gangs who roam the streets of New York City with a unrestrained behaviour towards drugs and alcohol during the era of HIV in the 90’s. The original song was by Lord Finnesse –  Hop 2Da Game
Is It Performance- Based, Narrative-based or Concept-Based?
How Much Of Each?
This Film is Concept based as it comments on teenage society
This also comments on how teenagers grew up to be and reflects that kids don’t stay nice forever. Teenagers wanted to explore things that only adults could do. Point of growing up to quick. Mac Miller Represents himself as Leo Fitzpatrick who is the main actor in the film.

Essay Form:

The Video I am analysing is Called ‘Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza’ by Mac Miller. Rostrum records, Rex Films and TreeJTV made this video and music happen, in 2010 Mac Miller brought out the album KIDS which had 17 tracks on there, number 14 is this song which talks about his life and how he is progressing through his career of being a Hip-Hop artist.

The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is that the Visuals have been made to be a imitation of the film KIDS where Mac Miller is representing himself as the main character of the narrative.  Being at the age of 18 when he created this album, he is representing himself as part of the society of the film because KIDS talks about how young teenagers explore the world in various ways which are through drugs, sex and violence. This is what his life would have almost been like because when he was younger he would not go to school and practise his music career at home instead.

The relationship between the music and the visuals has made the video fit with the type of music played. The video cuts clips to the beat of the song where a new verse is made will be another clip of Mac Miller in another location For example at the end of the verse “running off adrenaline” is the end of a line in a verse after that the clip changes and goes to another line of the verse.

The close up of the artists show us that he has a star persona, The use of the fact that he is wearing a ‘snap back cap’ is a symbol towards the character he is, as he always wears them for most of his other videos. Mac Miller is mainly focused on in the video being in front of everyone else showing that he is the leader of the people and that people listen to him is given the idea because as he is rapping, people follow him.

In the video we do not see any notion of looking as we are represented as being in front of him watching him as of a concept and performance based video. He knows that we are the audience because of how he mainly looks at the camera. I think that this type of editing was used because the song represents his way of living and as a leader of people who listen to his music they are shown at the back but we wish to focus on Mac Miller and therefore at the front because it makes it feel he is coming for us.

Many Intertextual references are used in this music video and the music itself, The original song was made by Lord Finesse but Mac Miller took the song and put his own new lyrics in and called the song ‘Cool Aid & Frozen Pizza’ two simple contents of food and drink kids enjoy. The idea of kids come from the fact that Mac Miller is still a young in youth and could be stereotyped as the teenagers  from the movie ‘KIDS’, Mac Miller has made his album cover similar to the Movie cover for Videos and DVD’s for the film. The title of the album and DVD are the same with the style of writing and the outfit of the characters on the covers are similar towards what teenagers of America in the 90’s.

This video is concept based because it is commenting on society and how teenagers actually socialise especially in the 90’s of America, We stereotype teenagers as causing trouble and a lot of it is true but looking at the film 'KIDS' that has been made Postmodern where the story has been made more dramatic then what teenagers of America are actually like.

Mac Miller’s ‘Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza’ is a comment on teenagers and what we actually can become, it is a comment on his life and what he has done to get to where he is and looks at what he wants through his success.

This is the album for the music track ‘Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza’. The name of this album is called KIDS, from this example we see that the name of this album is the same title and style of font as the movie KIDS. This is because they share the same idea of what teenagers are possibly like in the world especially of the 90’s where technology wasn’t as vast as it is now and more children would have been doing something outdoors socialising with friends rather than being indoors. We can understand that from the props in the album cover that this is meant to be set more in the past because for example there is a boom box which was mainly used in the early 90’s to play music. Mac Miller wanted to present himself in more with the past because of the way he lives he feels that is how we wants to be and wants to bring back the styles which he grew up with based in the 1995 movie.

The colour scheme used in the album is the same as the movie, For example the colour of the title is the same as KIDS the movie, K is red in both the album and the movie. The clothing which Mac Miller is wearing is made to be the same as Leo Fritzpatrick, for example Mac Miller is wearing a white t-shirt and beige shorts/trousers. This is because the album has been influenced by the movie and because Mac Miller is representing himself as the main character of ‘KIDS’ and is using the same props to make them seem alike.

Mac Miller’s music is based on old school Hip-Hop culture which he possibly was brought up with; from the front of the album we can identify this from the use of font. For example the words Mac Miller is written is old school graffiti. This is because he is reinforcing the point that he is trying to bring back the time period he grew up in and the writing does this to go with the other props.

In this Video we see Mac Miller in New York where skateboarders are using the area in to skate in, Mac Miller used to skate in his younger years. This is a good way for me to reflect my Artist profile because we can then see the kind of fashion and style of the character. If I created my Artist based around the fact he was a skateboarder we understand that companies that create skate wear would be appropriate for the pops.

There is a pause in the music; Malcolm McCormick approaches 4 young women on a set of swings. He shakes their hands and gives one a kiss; from this we understand that this video shows he has the interest in women and that the women are interested in him. A intertextual reference in this video is that sings represents children and if we look back at what the album relates to swings relate to the film 'KIDS' because the film is about young age teenagers and would hang in parks. I would like to do use the same technique but in a different situation.

Humour is added towards the end of the video where we see Mac Millers Fellow man holding in front of him a boom box hiding from the camera but in a humorous way. The video I wish to create would be humorous and even show mistakes to the video recording which films use because Audience enjoy to see the clips where they need to be retaken because of errors.

Analysing and decontructing a music video part one (Mikill Pane - Return Of Mr Pane)

Name of Track: Return of Mr Pane
Name of Artist: Mikill Pane
Features to look for:
General Example:
Detailed Example:
Genre Characteristics
Various, however he is a rapper but is different from everyone else as that is his style because he wants to be something no one else is.
He is a mix of different genres and sub-genres and wants to be different from other artists. He is a not well known artist in the UK and is not recognised globally. His audience is very niche as he doesn’t have a style or genre.
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
Visuals will show what he is saying to express to the people what he is talking about. Talks about himself and what people possibly think of him.
There are visuals where it shows what he is talking about, for example he says “lemon and lime in his corona” the visuals show a lemon and lime with a bottle of corona.
What is the relationship between the music and visuals?
Shows the lifestyle he lives
Living in London he is showing himself living in the outer skirts of London where we find estates and rough London boroughs
Are there Close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
There are Many Close up of the star persona of the artist
The camera mainly focus’ on the face of Mikill Pane, however we see that at the beginning the camera focus’ on the other parts of his body for example his shoes and the surrounding are shown before his face
Is there any reference to the notion of looking?
There are no notion of looking
The Camera does not use editing skills to make notion of looking of the artist instead we are constantly focused on his face and suburbs of the area he is filming in.
Are There Intertextual References?
There are no Intertextual references apart from possibly the clothing
Mikill pane only looks at the new and in the video does not use previous ideas. He is only representing himself and nothing more. The clothing could be used for advertising.
Is It Performance- Based, Narrative-based or Concept-Based?
How Much Of Each?
Concept based and possibly a little performance based.
The video is set up in the boroughs of London where Mikill Pane hangs around in, we can see that the video comments on himself and how he doesn’t care what people think about him

Essay Form:
The Video which relates to the idea of my music is made by a not well known Artist named Mikill Pan. The song which I am analysing is named ‘Return of Mr pane’. Directed, shot and edited by J.Miller. This song talks about himself and the kind of person he is. The genre of this video is mix of different genres to create a slight twist between several genres, the song relates to Hip-Hop, Rap, MC and grime.  The video, because of the London boroughs we can indicate that this video can relate to grime because in grime videos they are usually located in urban areas in boroughs of London or other cities.

The relationship between the visuals and lyrics are the showing of the star persona is there with the lyrics talking about himself and what people possibly think of him, for example he talks about ‘one you never expected was actually a rapper’ describes how people if they wasn’t to know who he was would not think of him as a rapper because his appearance doesn’t show it.  Another way the lyrics relates to the visuals is when there is a connection of showing the consumer what he is talking about, for example when he used the words ‘Lemon and Lime in his Corona’ a lemon and a lime will appear with a bottle of Corona appearing between them, this is to help with the idea of getting the message across to what type of person he is and expressing the feelings across to the public.

Music Relates to the visuals of the video through the uses of area, and styles. The area where the video was footage in the council estates of London where local shops and homes are, this relates to the fact that this is where Mikill Pane is from and that showing the type of genre this video would normally indicate is grime and MC where they would have been brought up and use their local areas to footage. However Mikill pane has a different appearance to what these types of artists are like for example the type of clothing he wears is different as to the brand and style, there is also a difference from the fact that he has tattoos covered over his body and two big stretchers in his ear. Without the music he would be stereotyped as punk and reggae.

Close up and made broadly of the artist to create his star persona. However not all close ups are focused on his facial image, for example in the opening before he starts rapping the lyrics the close ups are made on his shoes, tattoos and the area he is located in showing graffiti. This can help us indicate where he possibly hangs around possibly brought up to show us that his life isn’t rich yet still has talent.

In the video we seem to be focused on Mikill Pane and not with his notion of looking, with the camera work we are focused on the fashion he presents and the clothing which might be towards what he thinks for example he wears a t-shirt which says go F*** your-self’ representing his lyrics and how he believes what people might think of him is not the truth and what he thinks his is. The camera is also focused on himself and his voice seems to be in control of what happens in the video, for example when he says ‘The Trainer Collecting UFO Time Mayor’ trainers will pop up in front of him  of the type of shoes he likes.

There are no Intertextual references used in this video, Mikill pane looks at creating something new and because he is not a well known artist he isn’t able to create a video which uses lots of special effects etc. this video has been made plain and simple so that it looks good yet is cost effective. The only intertextual reference in the video could possibly be the clothes he is wearing maybe advertising them.

This Video is concept based because he is commenting on the public in what they think of him and he describing to us the type of person he is and what he thinks about things in his life, from this we understand that he doesn’t really care about other people because he seems to be fed up of the idea of what people think.  ‘who’s mouth that sort of bend to the side when he speaks’ is a comment towards himself possibly what someone may of said but doesn’t seem to bothered by it and exaggerating it to make people seem aware of it and show it is something different about him but people should accept it.

In Conclusion This video is a basic concept towards a way that unknown artists can make, yet become successful because it isn’t all just about the video and instead believe it should be about the music but to cover up the idea that to get to a broader audience a video needs to be created to get the artist somewhere. Mikill Pane is just enjoying making music instead of making loads of money.

Mikill pane Promotes this image towards his single does not have an album cover for this video and song, he used ‘HoodVideoShop’ to promote this song which is a YouTube channel. However there are pictures to represent the song and this one is one of them which is the first picture he made which helped promote him. This picture represents him towards the fact the picture is a image of him wearing glasses and has a beard but the sign of the two bones crossing each other is a representation of a pirate. This could be because he does not want to have to look up to anyone or follow others rules.

There are other singles and album covers which could represent other representation of the artist. One album Cover which is Identical to this but in a negative colour is ‘Summer In the big City’ This Album is the follow on from ‘Return of Mr pane’

Before the start of the lyrics of the song. We are made to see the representations that make Mr Pane. For example we see his shoes, tattoos and the area before we see his face. This give the audience concerns on who this artist may look like and is more for the audience to look forward to. This could be great in my music video because it will then make a great opening to the video not knowing who this new artist is.

In Mikill Pane video we see intertextual references which are shown to be heard in his lyrics yet they are actually produced in the video. For example this clip represents Mr Pane talking about corona beer with lemon and lime; this is represented in the video. For my coursework I wish to do the same with many similar ideas which seems to be a way for the lyrics to be in control of the video.

Using the signal interferences is a way to make the video seem that something about the video is distorted or that it could be coming to an end found in this video. This concept could be a great way of making my video seem distorted or that the mind is lacking which could be showing anything towards being intoxicated with some form of substance.

Analysing and decontructing a music video part one (Eminem - My Name Is)

Name of Track: My Name Is
Name of Artist: Eminem

What to look for:
General Example:
Detailed Example:
Genre Characteristics
Hip-Hop, Rap, Comedy
Eminem is one of the greatest rappers in the world, known for being one of the first white rappers to get famous in the industry of hip-hop. My Name is Hip-Hop genre based; the song reached #26 on VH1’s greatest 100 songs form the 90’s.
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
The lyrics fit with the music video
When he is expressing himself he is showing situation of which he is talking about, “chased him with a stapler” is showing Eminem in a head teacher’s office trying to stab the headmaster with a stapler.
What is the relationship between the music and visuals?
The music is about TV and who is to be seen.
Eminem recreates himself on a television in the 90’s in front of a Stereotypical couple of southern America as Bill Clinton, Porn star and a puppet. Intertextual references such as ‘Leave It To Beaver’ Is Used in the Opening and ‘The Brady Bunch’ as classic TV shows.
Are there Close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
Many close ups of the artists and some of other artists i.e. ‘Dr Dre’
Eminem has captured himself as a big icon and has a big star persona where he is representing himself as comedy to other artists where he imitates himself as other people.
Is there any reference to the notion of looking?
Yes but only as the couple watching the television where Eminem is showed on, so we are still represented as the audience.
We watch the channels flick through and we are focused mainly on the television as are the American couple finding it humorous
Are There Intertextual References?
There Are many Intertextual References which would be found on TV
Eminem’s videos are all about intertextual references on how he is taking views of television and making himself represent these icons, i.e. Bill Clinton and The Brady Show.
Is It Performance- Based, Narrative-based or Concept-Based?
How Much Of Each?
Concept based
Because Eminem is Commenting on society and Television in what people watch and is making it a joke by showing Bill Clinton and ridicules there lifestyle.

Essay Form:

Eminem is one of the best artists in the world who has made a career as well as a change in music, being one of the first
white rappers to make it into the industry. One of the first songs which made him famous was ‘My Name Is’ distributed through A&M Records and produced by Dr Dre. Relating to the previous analysed song.  However, this is an older song and sold more because Eminem is a brilliant artist. The genre of this song adopts is Hip-Hop and comedy because Eminem is postmodern and uses intertextual references to taunt society.

The Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is very basic because of presenting clips from ‘Chased him with a stapler’ actually is mimicking the words he says by showing Eminem chasing a head teacher around a desk in a Headmasters office. Comedy is often used a lot in this to make comedy turn into music.

The relationship between the music and the visuals in the video portrays classic television from America. This is presented in a stereotypical way.  The lyrics work with the music beat and therefore whenever an action happens in the visuals the music matches this change, not entirely with beat with it but the melody of the music flows with the action in what Eminem does. The music does cut with the visuals somewhat which makes the video seem more Hip-hop, because of the tempo of the cutting of the video.

There are many close ups of the artists to give a star persona. This is because Eminem wants to represent him to show who he is and through the use of imitating people can give the representation that Eminem is in everyone showing the use of comedy to make his video humorous.  The record Label is showing the consumers the artists involved in this video to attempt to sell possibly other artists who works with Eminem, for example Dr Dre is representing in this video which could be an indication to also try selling his reputation but Dr Dre is also a friend of Eminem and works beside him.

The idea that you see a couple watching “The Eminem Show” is angled in a way that you are part of that audience. This translates that Eminem is performing to us rather than to a camera. This eliminates the concept we are watching a music video, This is self reflexivity because Eminem knows that being in a Television he knows he is a piece of media text.. By doing the video in this way, it adds and could be seen as a great example of comedy music.  There is also a scene where you see the artists Dr Dre in Eminems eye; it then swaps over so you see Eminem in Dr Dre’s eye. By doing this scene it gives a close up on the artists and also helps with the convocation which is actually rapping between the two artists but influences it as a conversation.

There are many intertextual references used in this video, for example the use of Bill Clinton shows us the president of the Untied States and takes the mic out of him by just commenting on society. Other various Intertextual references used are Previous American TV shows such as ‘The Brady Bunch’ and ‘Leave it to Beaver’, this is because that he is on the television in the couples living room and therefore uses previous shows to make himself seem that he is everywhere by changing the words of the programme to his own, for example ‘The Shady Bunch’ is used and the word Shady is repeated in the Chorus because he wants to get his message across to get himself known in everyone who hears his music.

This video is Concept based and slightly performance Based because we are still watching Eminem through a television screen therefore it is putting on a show for the audience. It is also concept based because Eminem has commented on society and is expressing some of the incidents he has been through.

In conclusion this video is showing the consumers that his music and videos are both entertaining and is a great way to reinforce his performance and help sell his music. The video also helps with the fact that making music as a humour instead of having to use films and stands up to have a laugh we can have the same emotions through music.

These are the Albums which hold Eminem’s great hit through different time periods. The first single was the first release of the song, this was made to sell his music through a single album and then develop later in time to make the first album which would also sell this song.  From this the Single is straight upfront with the name of the song. Using this is great promotion because it still is a way to get his name across through using both his names. Artist name is used was Eminem but through the use of Comedy would change his Name to Slim shady, Slim shady was his alter ego where he would make another one of himself with a different attitude.  The red creates the sense of power and energy in a way that it makes this album sell well because people will want to buy this in the sense that Eminem is making his audience feel that this single holds so much.
The first album to have this song on it is ‘The Slim Shady LP’ this is an album which holds two of Eminem’s personalities but still has the sense that it is not his real self and therefore call the Album under his Alter self. From this album the props and colour scheme gives us a very dystopian feel about it, For example the use of colour being dark purple with a white moon out has a creepy feel to it that the music contents inside is not going to be on a positive note, The picture shows us a Body hanging out the back of the car, this suggests that Eminem has killed someone, or possibly something such as Eminem.
One of his finial Albums was based on the fact that he would collect all of his best singles and put them into a album which would be made for the consumers as they where the best to sell. From this album we understand that Eminem is trying to perform his best by selling the greatest hits. In the Album we see the bottom half of Eminem dresses in a suit which suggests to the audience that this is a show and is coming to an end. After this Album we witnessed the disappearance of Eminem from the public and press.

In the opening of the video ‘My Name Is’ we sit down to a 90’s television with a stereotypical Married couple watching the Slim Shady show. For my opening of my video I would maybe consider taking some form of action like this where we use The ….. show’ to make this video seem more than just a music video. The way Eminem uses comedy in his video, the artist I want to create I think should use comedy because it makes the video humorous to the audience.

Eminem in his videos demonstrates in what he is talking about in his lyrics. I would like to take this idea on because when I create the video I wish to have most of my video based on what the artist talks about and show what he means just to have a way of communicating to the audience the message I’m bringing across.
